“YES”, and Be Kind to a Turkey Day! :

A friend mailed me a vegetarian Thanksgiving roast recipe which was in my town’s local paper last week, but which came from Marie Oser, whose site is http://www.veggiechef.com. (Good site with lots of info.) I went there, trying to find an on-line version of the recipe, and got sidetracked by the Links page: http://www.veggiechef.com/links.htm
Then I got sidetracked by the link to Youth for Environmental Sanity (”YES”). This is an interesting site for youth, and informative for adults. One page I’d like to share, is their resource page, which has many good articles on a variety of environmental topics. Of particular interest to me for the purpose of this site is the “Eat less meat” article. But beyond that, see which ones are of particular interest to you: http://www.yesworld.org/resources.html
They’re all short. So it won’t take much time to read them all!

I didn’t find the Thanksgiving recipe that was in our paper. But did find these: http://www.veggiechef.com/recipes.htm
So I searched for other sites for something that could replace Americans’ need for the obligatory “turkey-as-tradition”….
Here are just a few, to give you a “flavor” for something new:

Vegan Nut Roast & Stuffing: http://www.boutell.com/vegetarian/nut-roast.html

Thanksgiving appetizers, main courses, desserts: http://www.boutell.com/vegetarian/Thanksgiving.html

Harvest Vegan Nut Roast: http://vegetarian.allrecipes.com/AZ/HrvstVgnNtRst.asp
(This recipe serves 3-4. But the site scales the recipe for different quantities, among other conversions.)

Vegan Roast: http://www.recipesource.com/text./special-diets/vegetarian/vegan-roast1.txt
(Serves 4)

Holiday Roast Roll: http://vegetarian.about.com/library/newsletters/blholroastroll.htm
(serves 6)

Thanksgiving full menu: http://members.tripod.com/~hannahdayan/Thanksgiving.htm#roast
(all kinds of recipes, including a variety of roasts!)

Prepared foods, and retailers: http://www.adoptaturkey.org/foods.htm

There are a lot more sites listed on Google.com. But this ought to be enough to give you a wide variety of alternatives. (If any of these sites look interesting to you, bookmark them for future reference.) You don’t have to be a vegetarian to try something new. If you’ve already bought a turkey, or you’re reluctant to “experiment” on your family this week, or can’t find all the ingredients on short notice, you can be creative next week. And if they love it, you can start a new family tradition for the next holiday. (The Christmas menu isn’t quite as etched in stone in the minds of Americans. And remember, Jesus’ family would NOT have celebrated his birthday with a ham! But that’s another topic, Babe.)

Personally, I don’t really care about going to all this work, cooking a big fancy meal. I’d be happy just having a few side dishes and a pie, and placing my picture of Francis at the center of the table as the obligatory “Turkey Presence”. Francis is a young turkey we “adopted” from Farm Sanctuary a couple of years ago. For more about that, see http://www.adoptaturkey.org — or view pictures of available adoptees at: http://www.adoptaturkey.org/adopt.htm

Have an abundantly kind holiday!.
