A diverse collection of recent news/articles/discoveries:

1) “Study: Fish Smarter than Thought”,
from All Things Considered, Friday, September 05, 2003

NPR’s Robert Siegel talks with Dr. Jens Krause, senior lecturer of biology at the University of Leeds and co-author of an article on fish intelligence. Krause co-authored a study in the journal Fish and Fisheries that concludes that fish are smarter than previously thought.

2) “Animal Pragmatism
Compassion Over Killing Wants to Make the Anti-Meat Message a Little More Palatable”

By David Montgomery
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, September 8, 2003; Page C01

3) “Doctor advises obese to ask: What would Jesus eat?”
By Alexandra Alter Religion News Service
September 13, 2003

4) “Mad Cowboy Speaks Out”
“Howard Lyman explains why the meat industry is at the centre of the modern environmental catastrophe and calls on Jains to walk their talk and become an instrument for change”
[I see no reason why this couldn't be addressed to Christians as well, with minor adaptations.]

5) “Bite Me

Going, Going… “

BY JASON SHEEHAN
from www.westword.com, originally published 9/11/2003
[Please excuse any vulgar words in this article, including the title. This article covers a few topics. I'm adding it because of what he has to say about PETA. Please "page down" to find it. It is interesting to see how he makes fun of PETA, while simultaneously promoting their cause. It is well worth a read by anyone who shares his attitude about animal rights and/or dietary choices. But please note that what he refers to as the exception to the rule regarding atrocities farmed animals are subjected to, is really the industry standard, and is still legal in this country.]

6) “Let the reader understand…”
–Mark 13:14
A statement of interpretive principles by which we understand the Holy Scriptures

Developed at the request of the Bishop of New York in response to actions of the Lambeth Conference 1998 by members of the Hermeneutics Study Group…

[I am including this long piece on Biblical understanding, not because I want to get into any theological or political debates over "current events", but because I thought the segment on the biblical basis for vegetarianism, etc., was interesting. If you're interested in reading what some "dietarily-neutral" theologians have to say about it, that segment is about two thirds down, (I have to "page down" 20 times to get to it) under the section titled "The eating of blood". I thought what they wrote about St. Augustine, the Lutherans and the Anglicans was of particular interest, especially the part that talks about Western Christianity's view of diet, and the non-binding obligation of "charity and quietness"....]

Today’s posting bumped information about and endorsements for Eternal Treblinka from the home page.

As a P.S. related both to the topic of this book, and the small collection of miscellaneous articles on this page, the following is a letter to the editor in the 9/18/03 edition of the Washington Times:
“A different kind of victim’, by Matt Prescott

Which is more humane: hanging upside-down, having one’s throat slashed? Or having a bolt gun shatter the skull into the brain first?
Here’s an article about the current “Halal controversy” going on in the UK.
(In my mind, neither method is more humane for the animals. All the debate is likely to do is to raise awareness that both methods are equally horrendous. The most humane choice is to avoid the whole debate, and go out for a veggie burger with all the fixin’s. And that wouldn’t be against anyone’s religion!)
