Senate Passes Akaka Amendment!
We are thrilled to announce that the U.S. Senate has passed legislation to prohibit the USDA from funding the slaughter of downed animals for human food! Thank you to everyone who contacted their U.S. Senators!
The legislation is part of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Bill. When the House discussed its version of this legislation, downed animal protection language was defeated by a narrow 3-vote margin. The House and Senate Agriculture Appropriations Bill will now be discussed in a conference committee where differences will be addressed. We are elated with the passage in the U.S. Senate, but this proposal now faces a challenging deliberation in the conference committee.
