An Open Letter to the Easter Bunny
Monday, April 5th, 2004Dear Ms. Bunny,
I am writing to request that you will not relinquish your babies to the care of humans this year. As you may remember from your past litters, humans tend to treat animals given at holiday times as novelties. And they are not the best choices for adoptive families of your children. They tend to keep your children in small cages, and don’t give them the care or attention they deserve.
Along the same line, please don’t give live chicks as Easter gifts to humans either. What are they going to do with them once they aren’t cute yellow fluff balls anymore?!
Also, I know you live in a hutch under the ground, so you probably aren’t aware of how badly battery hens are kept in this country. I’ll include a picture for you to reflect upon. I know children love to hunt for the eggs that you hide. And they may even enjoy dying them. But please understand that Easter may be the single “event” of the year when millions of enslaved chickens labor to lay a monumental amount of eggs for people’s holiday celebrations that just go to waste. How many people actually eat them when the egg hunt is over? They are decorations that will be thrown away. The hens suffer too much during their short miserable lives for such a frivolous waste. So if it wouldn’t be too much trouble, I am writing to request that you would consider hiding reusable plastic eggs instead. The children will have just as much fun searching for them. And you won’t be contributing to the suffering of others. Thank you for you consideration.
Best wishes for a cruelty-free Easter to you and your family.
