Please spread the word down there that as of last night (Friday, 9/2) Charlotte, NC (not Charleston) had the only Red Cross shelter in the country that accepted animalsWITH the shelter residents. We are housed in the CharlotteColiseum and the animal shelter is a mile down the road. As the only RC disaster mental health volunteer there last night, it was my privilege tohave a lengthy conversation with the 2 Animal Control Officers who brought crates, food, bowls, leashes, etc. for dogs, cats, etc. These are at the entrance where the refugees enter the coliseum. We have the #’s to call the shelter 24 hours/day and they will come, pick up the animal, hold and care for the animal free of charge for 2 weeks. After that, the charge is $14/day. They can also take horses & ponies in their stable, if cars pulling trailers arrive at the RC shelter.
We only had 40 folks yesterday, all of whom were dispersed to homes by late last night. (Nonehad animals). We waited last night for two planes to comefrom New Orleans, bringing 200 people. As of now, they still haven’t arrived. Word is that “they’ll be here tomorrow!” and we could have as many as 2000 by week’s end. I hope so, ‘cuz it’s a great facility, and staffed by good folks. Our old coliseum, Cricket Arena, will also be used if needed. These folks are really committed to the care of animals during this disaster, and unfortunately no one knows to bring their animals here. Please spread the word!
