Adoption of babies: A perspective on the exploitation of women in this country

I emailed this out to my “regulars” this morning:

The latest person (as of 4/1) to sign the guest book on my website
wrote a comment about the exploitation of mothers who are talked into giving up their babies for adoption.

This is her site — www.exiledmothers.com:

The Adoption Industry

Why “BIRTHMOTHER” Means “BREEDER”

Adoption of human babies is a topic our society has probably never thought about as being a bad thing (like so many other issues pertaining to animals) — a lesser or necessary evil. Everyone benefits, right?
A sacred cow for people who are on waiting lists. Maybe this would be a (divisive) topic for feminists to add to the conversation, when talking about issues of oppression. Maybe pro-life groups and churches should offer a different alternative to abortion.

Never having the experience of being “encouraged” to give up a baby, I don’t know how I feel about this (but may have had a subconscious discomfort with acquiring newborn babies instead of older orphans, and am standing precariously on the thin ice of hypocrisy, since both a family member and my boss adopted newborns, which we were all happy about). I think it’s worth passing along for wider consideration. I do like her suggestion at the bottom of the first URL to replace the term “birth mothers” [breeders] with either “mothers” or “natural mothers”. We could at least start there.

Feel free to cross-post.

I used two quotes on the first URL as my “signature quote”, although I don’t advocate the exploitation of animals by the pet industry, either….

“Adoption was created to provide homes for orphans. These by definition are children without parents. Car crashes, war, natural disasters. It was never created to provide children to ‘poor infertile couples’. When did the wires get crossed? I guess when someone started making money. Children are not a commodity!!!! Get a puppy.”

Not that the situations are the same, but this brought to mind the epitome of moral bankruptcy — the scheme of governments and churches to ship 10,000 children from England to Australia as another “win-win” solution — for everyone except the children and their families:
“The Lost Children”.

Here’s another thing I found at the Exiled Mother’s site:

What does the Bible say about adoption?

“THE WICKED SNATCH FATHERLESS CHILDREN FROM THEIR MOTHER’S BREASTS, AND TAKE A POOR MAN’S BABY AS A PLEDGE BEFORE THEY WILL LOAN HIM ANY MONEY OR GRAIN”

–Job 24:9

Have the Churches who were complicit in this (racist) atrocity ever apologized to the families?
