cartoon from www.weblogcartoons.com

Cartoon by Dave Walker. Find more cartoons you can freely re-use on your blog at We Blog Cartoons.

The Monday after Easter, I read a timely and encouraging blurb by one of the officers of my company, which ended with this poem. This reminds me of the cartoon. Sorry, I don’t know who wrote it….

DON’T QUIT!

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,
When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill,
When funds are low, and the debts are high,
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.

Life is queer with its twists and turns.
As every one of us sometimes learns.
And many a failure turns about,
When he might have won had he stuck it out.
Don’t give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out.
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far.
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit,
It’s when things seem worse
that you must not quit.

William Wilberforce movie, ‘Amazing Grace’

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

I was extremely happy to hear about this new movie, and would like to add a few URL’s that cover aspects of the film and of Wilberforce’s life that most people probably don’t know about (but should)….

“Wilberforce (1759-1833) was part of the evangelical reform movement which achieved much in the 19th century and is a fine example of a Christian whose compassion was not selective. Best known for his part in the abolition of slavery, Wilberforce was also an advocate for animals. He made an ardent speech in support of a bill to stop bull-baiting, and was on the founding committee of what is now the RSPCA.”

Let your continual mercy, O Lord, kindle in your Church the never-failing gift of love, that, following the example of your servant William Wilberforce, we may have grace to defend the poor, and maintain the cause of those who have no helper; for the sake of him who gave his life for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

I’ll add these to that linked page later. But since we’re still in Lent, I’ll keep them on the home page:
