“Grow the Earth”

I was going through my pictures, and decided to repost two — the “before” and “after” pictures of my garden.

Update, August 9th: I just did the “St. Fiacre thing” this morning, and spaded up an area in front of the garage for next year.

It’s about 15′ x 8′. The dirt actually looks pretty fertile, if one can tell by the color. Theoretically (if I didn’t need space to walk, and if I could think of enough things to grow), if I went with the Square Foot Gardening philosophy, I could grow as many as 120 different things. Or even if I wanted to have 4 4′x4′ Square Foot Gardens, with paths in-between, that would still be 69 different things in the four squares. But I think it will be my “potato patch” next year, sharing space with appropriate companion plants.

As long as I’m posting this, I thought I’d add that after I dug up my garlics, I planted some celery; kohl rabi in that space, and some Chinese cabbage near the cabbages in the far section.  On 8/6, I also planted some small pots with oregano, parsley, sage & thyme, and a larger pot with some Swiss chard and kale.  If necessary, I can bring the pots in, when the weather gets cold.  But I think some of those things are either cool weather plants, and/or they should be mature before the first frost.

Also, I went to Stein’s in Kenosha yesterday, and was happy to find some organic fertilizers that don’t have any animal byproducts in them!  None of that is available where I live.  So I got four different types of fertilizers, not that I necessarily need them, although the Earth Box might do better if I’d sneak a litte in there at this late date.
