Veganic garden as of 6-8-08
This top picture is of my blackberry & blueberry plants that are on the north side of my “park”.
Because it was sunny today, I decided to take more pictures of my garden. When my priest asked me what excites me, I said watching my potato plants grow. It was a serious answer, since I’ve never tried to grow potatoes before, and they are bigger than anything else I’ve planted so far.
Today, I transplanted 3 cucumber plants from the strawberry area to my Square Foot Garden, since there was only one in that square. And I moved 4 of the “big” Better Boy and grape tomato plants from the big pot to the area where the cucumbers were. I don’t have enough tomato cages, but thought they could be secured to the chickenwire strawberry cage, or grow over it. I put some Better Boy tomatoes I planted from seed back into the big pot. (I still have a few Beefsteak seedlings, and am not sure where I’ll put them all, if they all grow.)
So the big pot now has one Big Boy and one grape tomato plant that I bought, along with 4 or 5 little seedlings that I grew from seed. (Descriptions of the pictures are below the pairs, because I don’t know how to squeeze text in between them.)
The first picture shows the whole veggie garden area, looking west.
The second picture is just a sunny view of my Square Foot Garden, and the potato patch, which shares space with corn & nasturtiums on the left, and my overflow of cabbages, broccoli & cauliflower on the right. From front left, etc., the 16 SFG squares have yellow crooked neck squash, nasturtiums, cucumbers, peas, lettuce, amaranth, yellow bell pepper, cabbage, cilantro, green onions, beets, bush beans, cayenne pepper, jalapeno pepper, carrots & broccoli.
The third picture is of the potato patch, looking toward the east.
The fourth picture is the next section to the west of the potatoes. In the back are eggplants & beets, bush beans & cabbage. Toward the center are cayenne peppers & broccoli. I planted clover seeds as a cover crop in the pathway through that section of the garden, as a fertilizer, and so my feet don’t get too muddy.
The 5th picture is to the left of the 4th. In front are the garlics, which were my original inspiration to grow (some of) my own food. My seed tomatoes are in the cages, flanked by yellow banana pepper, a yellow bell pepper & 4 green bell peppers in the front, and jalapeno peppers in the back. I planted pea seeds inside the cages toward the front, and radish seeds in the cages toward the back. In the background, I planted beets & more bush beans.
The 6th picture is of the shady section north of the fifth. In the back are oats (mainly as a cover crop, because I didn’t know what they’d do. In the foreground is seeded organic lettuce, a couple of head lettuces, and some trailing strawberry plants from the cage that isn’t pictured. There are a couple of other things in there, too. Maybe radishes that reseeded themselves.
The 7th picture is looking toward the east of that section.
